THE PLAIN-ENGLISH GLOSSARY
The words behind
the numbers.
A useful definition should make the next question easier to ask.
Return to player (RTP)
The average proportion of stakes a game’s mathematical model returns as payouts across many plays. It is not a promise about one person’s session. Read the RTP guide →
House edge
The game’s expected operator advantage, often expressed as a percentage of the amount staked. It describes an average, not a fixed fee charged every time. Understand house edge →
Randomness
A lack of a reliably predictable next outcome in the relevant model. Random sequences can contain repetitions and clusters; they do not have to look evenly mixed.
Independence
One event does not change the probability of another. This is an assumption that must fit the process, not a rule that automatically applies to every game.
Variance
A mathematical measure of spread around an average. Two distributions can have the same average and very different patterns of outcomes.
Random number generator (RNG)
A hardware or software system that generates values used by a game. The rules map those values to outcomes; the generator alone is not the complete game design. Look beyond the reels →
Gambler’s fallacy
The mistaken belief that an independent random process owes a particular result because of what happened recently. Why “it’s due” is not evidence →
Near miss
A losing result that looks close to a winning one. Its emotional impact can differ from its mathematical meaning. Explore the psychology →
Progressive jackpot
A prize pool that grows under a defined contribution mechanism, then resets according to the game’s rules. Its size alone is not a countdown to a win. Read the explanation →
Self-exclusion
A process for restricting access to gambling services or venues for a period of time. Coverage and rules vary. It can be one part of a broader support plan. Find independent support →
